Master scouting report
Drew Mestemaker has the touch, anticipation and mobility to develop into an NFL starter. His inexperience shows when he has to move beyond his first read, and inconsistent footwork can undermine his accuracy. He needs time to develop before a team asks him to run an NFL offense.
01An unusual starting point
Mestemaker reached North Texas as a walk-on after playing safety and punter, alongside backup quarterback duties, at Vandegrift High School. He made his first college start in the 2024 bowl game, then started all 14 games in 2025. That season produced 4,379 passing yards, 34 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 319 completions in 463 attempts. He led the FBS in passing yardage and won the Burlsworth Trophy before transferring to Oklahoma State. That is a substantial season of production built on a remarkably short starting history.
02Timing, touch and usable arm talent
Mestemaker does his best work throwing with timing. He can release the ball before a receiver breaks, place it away from coverage and take speed off a pass when touch is needed. His willingness to attack intermediate windows gives the offense more than a short passing game. He is willing to let a clear-out route develop, then drive the ball into the opening before coverage closes. The arm evaluation is less settled than the highlights suggest. He can drive the ball downfield, but passes toward the sideline sometimes lose velocity. The question is whether he can produce that velocity consistently with better footwork.
03The next answer has to arrive sooner
He can use his eyes to move defenders and take advantage of the space they leave. He is less consistent reading traffic over the middle, particularly when coverage changes after the snap. He has shown he can work beyond his first target and reset his feet for the next throw. When the initial answer disappears, recognition and decision speed can lag. That hesitation can leave him holding the ball too long and taking avoidable sacks. Pressure exposes another part of his inexperience. He can struggle to recognize defensive-line stunts, then retreat instead of finding space to reset. Backing away from the rush can turn a manageable loss into a drive-killing sack.
04Make the delivery repeatable
His feet and release do not always work together. Inconsistent footwork and a release point that sometimes drops too low make his ball placement less reliable. A steadier base would help him deliver accurately when he has to move between reads. His deep-ball touch is also inconsistent. Some deep passes float long enough for coverage to recover because he relies too heavily on his arm. He needs to generate more power through his legs and hips to keep those passes from hanging in the air.
05Mobility that serves the pass
Mestemaker has the movement skills to navigate a crowded pocket and create after the original structure breaks down. He can escape the rush and deliver without setting his feet, extending plays that would otherwise end in a sack. His mobility is most useful for buying time to pass. He needs to distinguish between a chance to extend the play and a pocket he should stay in.
Strengths
Can deliver before the receiver finishes the break and adjust the throw to the available space.
Has enough mobility and arm flexibility to keep a passing play alive after moving off his spot.
Concerns
When the initial answer disappears, recognition and decision speed can lag.
Inconsistent footwork and a release point that sometimes drops too low make his ball placement less reliable.
NFL role and scheme fit
A spread offense that gives him clear reads and room to attack intermediate routes would suit him best. He needs to become more comfortable reading the full field while developing more consistent footwork. He would benefit from time behind an established starter while he learns a more demanding passing game.
Bottom line
Mestemaker's anticipation, touch and ability to throw on the move make him an intriguing developmental quarterback. He needs to get through his reads faster and deliver from a more consistent base. A team drafting him should have a plan for his footwork, coverage recognition and transition out of a college spread offense. He has starting potential, but he needs development time before competing for that job.

The Draftanomics assessment, synthesized from attributed reporting. Role and development language expresses scouting opinion.
Original Draftanomics synthesis of published evaluations of the 2025 season and subsequent preseason scouting. This edition does not evaluate 2026 regular-season games or claim an independent film study. Evaluators disagree about arm strength and the maturity of the progression work; the assessment preserves those uncertainties. Official school records govern biographical facts and production. Proprietary grades, charted metrics and player comparisons are excluded.
