Master scouting report
Holmes makes the strongest NFL case as a quick interior disruptor whose hands and leverage can let him play above his dimensions. The attractive part is a path to useful snaps against both the run and pass; the unresolved part is whether he can control an NFL block when he does not win the initial exchange.
01Production with context
Texas Tech’s complete 2025 record gives Holmes 38 tackles, nine tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks in 14 games, with four pass breakups. His playing opportunity expanded after Skyler Gill-Howard’s injury, and he finished with Associated Press second-team All-America recognition. The transfer was not his introduction to starting football: he had already made 16 starts at Houston. Those two stages matter to the evaluation. He brought experience into a better supporting front and turned a larger role into disruption; this was more than an unknown reserve producing one memorable championship-game rush.
02Creating the first advantage
The first step gives Holmes a way to attack the edge of a guard before a square block forms. Matt Miller identifies quickness and a forceful bull rush, while A to Z Sports describes the flexibility and movement to threaten from different interior spots. That combination is more valuable than speed alone. A guard who must respect the initial gap threat can become vulnerable to power, but Holmes still has to arrive with leverage and a useful hand position. An attacking three-technique role is the clearest application of those strengths; it does not require pretending he is an enormous space-eating nose tackle.
03Hands, reach and recovery
Mike Renner’s strongest endorsement concerns the way Holmes places his hands on blockers’ pads in the run game. Drew Collings also describes active, forceful hand work and the ability to separate, while being less certain about his anchor from snap to snap. This is the central tension in the report. Well-timed hands can keep a compact defender from being engulfed, but they do not make limited reach irrelevant. Holmes has less margin for a late or misplaced strike. The encouraging view is a technician who can win the first contact; the concern is how much of that advantage survives once a longer blocker has secured his chest.
04A useful run defender, with a disputed ceiling
The run-defense opinions are meaningfully different. Renner sees one of the most effective run defenders on a strong Texas Tech line. The A to Z evaluation is more concerned about inconsistent punch, anchor and the limits of a shorter frame. Averaging those views into “solid against the run” would hide the actual decision. A defense should want Holmes attacking a defined responsibility with help available against combinations, then evaluate how often his hands keep the block from developing. Asking him to absorb size indefinitely would demand a different strength from winning quickly through leverage.
05Turning disruption into a rush plan
Holmes has more to offer than chasing a quarterback after someone else creates the opening. His quickness and power give him plausible direct ways to stress a guard, and the 4.5-sack season supplies actual finishing production. Collings still treats the broader repertoire as a development area. For NFL usage, the important progression is connecting the second action to the blocker’s response: power after a soft set, a lateral answer when the guard commits, and enough balance to stay involved when the first attempt stalls. Connecting those actions would let him stay dangerous after the guard stops the first move.
Strengths
Initial quickness, useful leverage and disruptive hand work offer complementary ways to win inside.
Experience at Houston and a productive Texas Tech season give the evaluation more substance than a short replacement cameo.
Concerns
Anchor and hand consistency remain the dividing line between an effective attacking rotation player and a defender who can take a broader workload.
Limited reach raises the cost of losing first contact against NFL interior size.
NFL role and scheme fit
Start with a rotational interior role in a front that lets him attack a gap, slant and work alongside a sturdier block absorber. He can compete for early-down work while supplying an interior rush option, but the staff should earn its confidence in expanded assignments through his anchor and recovery against combinations. The roster value comes from being useful in both phases without needing to become a different body type.
Bottom line
Holmes is a credible NFL interior prospect with an identifiable way to win. At 300 pounds, with a complete season of productive interior work, he offers enough substance to merit a meaningful place in a defensive-line rotation. His next step is not simply accumulating more tackles: it is making his first-contact wins and block recovery dependable enough to keep him on the field when the offense knows exactly where it wants to run.
