Master scouting report
Simmons already looks like a premier attacking edge, with 21 sacks in two seasons, an explosive first step, the bend to turn the corner and the burst to close. To reach the top of the class, he needs a more automatic counter plan, firmer run defense and fewer penalties.
01Production
Simmons produced from the moment he reached Austin. He had 48 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and nine sacks as a freshman, then followed with 43 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and an SEC-best 12 sacks in 2025. Through two seasons he has 91 tackles, 29.5 tackles for loss, 21 sacks and six forced fumbles. Those are not one-year breakout numbers; he has been changing games since his first college season.
02Get Off
Everything starts with his get-off. Simmons can threaten the outside shoulder before the tackle finishes his set, forcing hurried depth and making every counter more dangerous. Tackles have to protect the corner immediately; once they overset, he has room to cross their face or convert speed into contact.
03Bend And Finish
Once he gets hip-to-hip, Simmons has the ankle flexibility, lean and acceleration to flatten at the top of the rush. He does not need a long runway to close, and quarterbacks feel his speed even when the initial corner is not clean. The bend is a strength. The 2026 question is how much of it survives when a stronger tackle lands first contact and narrows his track.
04Rush Plan
The problem is not a lack of moves; it is linking them together. When the first speed rush stalls, he can pause instead of moving immediately to the next answer. His biggest pass-rush improvement would be a reliable second move that arrives without stopping his feet.
05Hands And Power
His hands are violent when the timing is right, and he can turn speed into enough force to compress a tackle who sells out for the corner. He is still a speed-first rusher, not a power end. When a blocker squares him, controls his chest and makes him restart, the rep can stall. A reliable long arm, quicker hand replacement and better separation after contact would keep tackles from sitting on his speed.
06Run Defense
Simmons makes splash plays against the run. He can cross a tackle's face, chase from the back side and create a loss before the block takes shape. Sarkisian has praised his growth in this area, but the down-to-down edge work is not finished. He still has to keep his outside arm free, anchor against down blocks and tight ends, and play his gap instead of chasing penetration that opens the edge behind him.
07Pursuit And Finish
Range and closing burst extend his impact beyond the first rush lane. Simmons can retrace when the quarterback steps up, flatten from the back side and erase space quickly on runs away from him. His production includes six forced fumbles in two seasons. His range is real, but overpursuit can take him out of the play.
08Discipline
A rash of penalties hurt Texas early in 2025, and Sarkisian briefly cut Simmons's snaps while saying he needed to stop trying to jump the snap and play within the call. Simmons settled down and finished the season with 12 sacks, but he still has to prove the penalties are behind him. NFL offenses will test his timing and contain discipline with cadence, misdirection and protection changes. He has to attack without giving away free yards or abandoning the edge.
09Development And Leadership
Sarkisian said Simmons grew as a run defender in 2025 and praised his development as a team leader. Texas also brought him to 2026 SEC Media Days as one of its three player representatives.
10Nfl Projection
In 2026, Simmons has to show that he can control a game on every down, not just wreck passing situations. Watch whether the counter arrives after first contact, whether he holds the edge against power, whether he stays in his gap and whether the penalties disappear. Right now he projects most cleanly as an attacking edge; the pass rush is easier to trust than his fit in every front or assignment.
Strengths
Premium get-off forces tackles to protect the corner immediately and creates leverage for the rest of the rush plan.
High-end cornering and closing burst convert early wins into pressures, sacks and forced fumbles.
He has 21 sacks, 29.5 tackles for loss and six forced fumbles in two college seasons.
He can win with outside speed, counter inside, work stunts and reduce over guards on passing downs.
Pursuit range and back-side acceleration expand his impact beyond isolated one-on-one pass-rush wins.
He raised his sack total from nine to 12 and earned a larger leadership role entering 2026.
Concerns
When a tackle controls the first move, the counter is not automatic and the rush can stall.
He struggles more when tackles square him up and stop his momentum; the power game and block separation are still developing.
He creates negative plays, but can lose contain or give up his gap while hunting penetration.
His aggression still costs him: early-2025 penalties and occasional contain losses gave offenses free yards.
NFL role and scheme fit
Simmons fits best as a wide-aligned edge in an even front or the primary rush linebacker in an odd front. Let his get-off dictate the rep, move him across the formation on passing downs and use stunts or interior reductions when protections overset the edge. He can play early downs, but a defense should avoid burying him in head-up power and repeated interior fits while his block separation develops. An occasional drop can disguise pressure; his primary job should be rushing the passer.
Bottom line
Simmons already looks like a high-end NFL pass rusher. He has 21 sacks in two seasons, an explosive first step, the bend to turn the corner and the burst to finish. The likely outcome is an early-impact starting edge with game-changing upside, not a traits-only developmental bet. To become the top edge in the class, he must link his counters, hold the edge more consistently and cut out the penalties.
