Ponton made his first college start at left tackle in Texas Tech's 2024 bowl game against Arkansas. He then won the right-tackle job for 2025 and started all 14 games, becoming the youngest member of a line that used the same starting five throughout the season. He earned Freshman All-America recognition from the Football Writers Association of America. That is substantial responsibility for an early-career blocker, including postseason work. It supports a serious developmental evaluation, while the fact that he stayed in the lineup should not be mistaken for proof that each protection problem was solved.
