Master scouting report

Johnson is a true Y tight end with the hands, route feel and post-catch balance to stay on the field for every personnel package. His TE1 case depends on handling a featured receiving role while becoming a more forceful and consistent in-line blocker.

01Experience And Production

Johnson spent two seasons at Louisville before transferring to Oregon, then started 10 of 15 games behind first-rounder Kenyon Sadiq in 2025. He caught 32 passes for 510 yards and three touchdowns, with two scores during Oregon's playoff run. That production came on 600 offensive snaps and included a reception in each of the final 14 games.

02Alignment Versatility

Oregon can attach Johnson to the formation, use him as a wing or detach him into the slot. His broad frame creates a believable run surface from every alignment, so motion does not announce pass. He is more natural in line than many modern receiving tight ends without becoming limited to that role.

03Release And Routes

Johnson releases with balance and builds speed smoothly for a player his size. He is fluid rather than sudden, and sharper pace changes would help him separate when an NFL safety matches him in man coverage.

04Hands And Catch Radius

His hands are reliable and his catch radius expands the quarterback's margin for error. Johnson adjusts outside his frame, tracks over his shoulder and protects the ball through ordinary contact. He does not need every target placed on his chest, which makes him useful between linebackers and safeties.

05Vertical And Contested Game

Johnson can threaten the seam and win above smaller defenders, but he is not a pure speed mismatch. His stride eats space once he gets moving, and his frame keeps the catch point available even when separation is modest. NFL defenders with length will test whether he can finish the same plays through heavier contact.

06After The Catch

He runs with balance and enough lateral quickness to make the first tackler miss. Johnson can plant, redirect and accelerate without looking like a lumbering in-line target, while his size lets him fall forward through glancing contact. He is more chain mover than breakaway runner, but the extra yards are repeatable.

07Run Blocking

Johnson has the frame and willingness to execute base, reach and split-flow assignments. His placement can be accurate, yet he does not consistently roll his hips and displace an edge defender at the point of attack. Better leverage and sustained footwork would turn functional positioning into starting-caliber in-line value.

08Pass Protection

The size gives Johnson a chance to absorb an edge rusher or scan across the formation in protection. He should be useful as an occasional sixth protector, though that assignment is not yet a defining strength.

09Situational Value

Johnson became more prominent when Oregon's schedule tightened and scored twice during the playoff run. His ability to present the same formation for run, play action or a seam route gives an offense answers on third down and in the red zone. The next step is commanding targets when defenses treat him as the primary tight end rather than Sadiq's complement.

10Development And Makeup

Johnson accepted a supporting role after transferring and still produced one of Oregon's most efficient tight end seasons. Coaches trusted him for 10 starts and 600 snaps, evidence that his assignment work extends beyond the receiving line. A full year as TE1 will show whether he can carry the weekly blocking and route burden without losing efficiency.

The case for the player

Strengths

  • He can align in line, at wing or in the slot without changing the offense's personnel picture.

  • Reliable hands and a wide catch radius let him finish throws outside his frame.

  • He produced 510 yards and three touchdowns while sharing the position with a first-round pick.

  • Fluid route movement and zone awareness create dependable intermediate targets.

  • Balance and lateral agility generate useful yards after the catch at tight end size.

  • Ten starts and 600 snaps show that Oregon trusted him in a complete offensive role.

The questions that remain

Concerns

  • He is a functional in-line blocker but does not consistently create movement against defensive ends.

  • His route game is fluid rather than explosive, limiting clean separation against man coverage.

  • A 32-catch season does not yet prove he can sustain featured-target volume.

  • NFL length and contact will challenge a contested-catch game built partly on frame advantage.

Building the fit

NFL role and scheme fit

Use Johnson as a true Y in an offense that moves the tight end between the line, wing and slot. Play action, seams, crossers, stick routes and intermediate overs suit his hands and route feel, while split-flow action lets him contribute to the run design without asking him to drive a defensive end on every snap. He can become a three-down starter if his leverage and sustain catch up to his receiving value.

Bottom line

Johnson already looks like an NFL starter because he combines traditional tight end structure with legitimate receiving skill. The hands, alignment flexibility and post-catch balance should translate quickly. His draft ceiling rests on a simple question: can he become a forceful enough blocker and a productive enough featured target to justify first-round treatment? A complete 2026 season can answer both.
