How are NFL player comparisons generated?
By nearest-neighbour matching on pre-draft profile — not by watching tape and picking a name that feels right.
A comp here is the answer to a mechanical question: which NFL players, at the same position, had the most similar profile coming out of college? Similar size, testing, production, age, program.
That is deliberately narrower than what a scout means by a comp. It carries no claim about play style, temperament or how someone looks on film. Two players can match closely on every pre-draft input and play nothing alike.
The value is calibration rather than flattery. Seeing which past players shared a profile — and what happened to them — anchors expectations in a way that a single aspirational name does not. A comp list where most of the names washed out is telling you something.
When a prospect's profile is too sparse to match on, we refuse to generate a comp rather than reaching for the nearest famous name. A comp built from two of eight signals is a coincidence with a headshot.
