Master scouting report

Moten’s first step can beat a guard before the block develops. His quickness and flexibility make him dangerous getting into the backfield, while holding his ground at the line is a weaker part of his game. There is more to his pass rush than the initial burst: he has shown power, counters and the effort to keep working after contact.

01First step and pursuit

When Moten times the snap well, he can beat the blocker’s first movement and create penetration against the run or pass. He moves laterally well enough to cross a guard’s face and loop on line games. His closing speed also shows up in pursuit, where he can finish behind the line. He can also turn that burst into a bull rush, forcing the guard to handle power as well as quickness.

02Hands and pass rush

Moten can strike forcefully and use leverage to drive a blocker backward. He also has counters when the first attack is met, rather than relying entirely on a clean path off the snap. Ryan Roberts is less convinced by his hand power and punch timing. Andrew Harbaugh sees stronger hands and more effective power in his Pittsburgh and USF study. He has several ways to beat a guard, but his punch still needs work. Swim and arm-over moves give him ways past the blocker’s shoulder, and he has flashed combinations that finish with a rip. Those moves give him alternatives to driving straight through the guard, though his ability to reset and change direction during the rush remains uneven.

03Run defense

Double teams can move Moten out of his gap, limiting his usefulness as a run anchor. He fits a defense that wants its tackles to attack more naturally than one asking them to absorb blocks and control the line. He has shown the strength to knock a block backward, but does not consistently maintain his pad level or gap responsibility. Getting upfield only helps if he still controls the space the runner needs; a defense cannot accept an open lane in exchange for penetration elsewhere. He needs to stay lower through contact and remain in his assigned gap when he cannot beat the block cleanly.

04College context

Moten’s larger role arrived in 2025, when he started all 14 games he played and made second-team All-ACC. Miami credits him with 31 tackles, nine tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He had two sacks against Virginia Tech and another 1.5 against Pittsburgh, so most of that sack production came in those two games. He started all four playoff games and matched his career high with five tackles against Indiana in the championship game. In 2024, he played 13 games with two starts and recorded 18 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and one sack. He had appeared in 11 games in 2023 after playing twice during his 2022 redshirt season. He has a full season of starting work to build on, although the sacks were concentrated in a short stretch.

Three-technique is the clearest fit: align him on a guard’s outside shoulder and let his first step threaten the gap. Expanding that job should depend on how reliably he handles the run blocks it brings.
