Master scouting report

Johnson projects as a movable starting safety with post range, length to match bigger receivers and natural ball skills. He is most effective playing from space. Early route jumps expose deeper coverage, and his current strength does not support heavy box duty.

By Draftanomics · Sources & edition · Print report

01Career Breakout

Johnson's 2024 season was limited after preseason foot surgery, and he recorded only three tackles. He then started eight of ten games in 2025 and finished with 48 tackles, four interceptions and three pass breakups. That rapid rise established his playmaking ability, with only one full season to demonstrate its consistency.

02Alignment Versatility

Notre Dame can use Johnson in the post, in split-safety structures, over the slot or near the box. He moves comfortably between those jobs and does not need a predictable pre-snap alignment to function. His best NFL value is the ability to disguise rotations while still reaching the ball from several starting points.

03Deep Coverage

Johnson has the stride length and closing burst to patrol a large area from depth. He can recover from behind a route and use his reach to contest without arriving early. The range is real, but his desire to jump the first developing route can open the deeper window behind him.

04Ball Skills

Johnson tracks naturally, extends beyond his frame and becomes a runner quickly after the catch. He attacks the ball with confidence, which is both a defining strength and the source of some coverage risk.

05Man Coverage

His length gives him a chance against tight ends and bigger slot receivers. Johnson can stay attached from off leverage and make up ground when the ball arrives.

06Tackling

He closes with speed, keeps his feet alive in space and generally secures the runner. The long frame helps him finish outside his body without relying on a perfect angle. He must keep the strike zone clean and avoid turning every downhill chance into a collision.

07Run Support

Johnson is willing to insert from depth and can chase a play to the boundary. His current strength is the finish after he clears traffic, not taking on a tight end or climbing lineman squarely in the box. Added functional strength and quicker block avoidance would make the near-line alignments more than a changeup.

08Coverage Discipline

The same anticipation that creates interceptions can pull him away from his responsibility. Play action, double moves and layered routes can tempt him to drive before the quarterback commits. A more patient first step would preserve the splash plays while eliminating avoidable explosives.

09Special Teams Value

Johnson returned a blocked punt for a touchdown against Texas A&M. His awareness, range and open-field ability add special-teams value while his defensive responsibilities develop.

10Development And Makeup

After foot surgery limited his 2024 season, Johnson earned Freshman All-America recognition and a national defensive player-of-the-week award in 2025. The productive return establishes a meaningful recovery history. One starting season remains a short sample for assessing his coverage discipline and sustained workload.

The case for the player

Strengths

  • Four interceptions in 2025 confirm natural tracking, hands and finishing ability.

  • He can align deep, over the slot or near the box without looking misplaced.

  • Length and closing speed let him contest throws from behind the receiver.

  • Open-field tackling supports deep-safety and selected underneath assignments.

  • He has already scored on an interception and a blocked-punt return.

  • His recovery from foot surgery to a breakout season shows strong developmental momentum.

The questions that remain

Concerns

  • Aggressive route jumps can vacate the deeper part of his coverage.

  • Play strength remains light for regular box duty against NFL tight ends and linemen.

  • His defensive résumé rests on one starting season and ten 2025 appearances.

  • The 2024 foot surgery belongs in the durability history even after a productive return.

Building the fit

NFL role and scheme fit

Johnson belongs in a multiple secondary that rotates its safeties after the snap. Let him play the post, match bigger slots and drive on throws from split-field alignments while using box snaps selectively. Match quarters and pattern zone give him chances to use length and instincts without forcing him to absorb blocks all afternoon. Special-teams experience adds early roster value as the coverage discipline matures.

The Draftanomics view

Bottom line

Johnson has the range, length and ball skills to start in a secondary that moves its safeties between the post, split-field coverage and selected slot matchups. He can contribute in space immediately, with special-teams experience supporting an early role. More patient eyes are necessary to prevent route bait from creating explosives; added strength would expand his box assignments.
